The original size is the 12-frame Dadant Blatt hive with a nest base of approximately 50x50 cm, which provides ample space for the colony to develop.

Over time, the 10-frame version has also become popular, created as a reduction in the traditional size. The theoretical size would be 42.5x50 cm, but in Italian production practice, the standard 43x50 cm has become established, and is now the most commonly used size in apiaries.
